Fall is definitely my favorite season. There is something about the shorter days that makes me want to head to the kitchen and drink make something warming. I also love the fact that we can finally light the fireplace, and I can settle into the big armchair closest to the flames, and read some ridiculously huge book.
But what I love most about autumn are the colors. While we don’t get the dramatic leaf show that I grew up with in New England, the trees and vines that do turn, pop out of an Umbrian landscape where the weather shifts dramatically. One moment there is fog, and the next bright sunshine. I love the way the morning mist sprays droplets on my sea green cabbages or how the sun beams through the bright red Virginia Creeper. Brilliant yellow quinces, deep purple olives, ruby pomegranates. After the burnt out end of summer, when everything turns a baked brown, it’s a virtual kaleidoscope of colors.
As so often happens on Mondays, I’ve no serious blog to post. I was too busy this weekend cooking, reading and color gazing. So there’s no recipe, no great new restaurant discovery. Just these autumn photos to brighten up your Monday.

I’m so happy that you didn’t have anything special to post, otherwise, we wouldn’t have had the pleasure of this wonderful autumn visit, to your yard and garden! Thank you.

Hi . . . I so enjoy your posts and admire the photographs. What camera do you use?

Hi Elizabeth, I have been a big fan of yours since I first purchased your beautiful book, “Restoring a Home in Italy” in 2001. Because we travel to Italy every year and stay in Rome for 1-2 months, I started reading your blog ‘Eat Italy’. So informative-just like Kathy McCabe’s newsletter ‘Dream of Italy’. Why is it that when we fall in love with Italy, we fall hard! Love your pictures and would also like to know what you use for a camera.

I’m glad the photos brightened up everyone’s day!
@JBrown: I use a Cannon S95. I call it The Magic Camera. For obvious reasons.

With photos this lovely, who needs words to boot? And I am grateful to know the name of your magic camera as I am sorely in need of one.
Thank you for yet another dose of inspiration. What beauty surrounds you!
