I was born in St. Louis, Missouri and lived there until I was twelve, when I moved with my family to Rome. This instilled not only a love of languages, but also a deep appreciation and undying passion for all things Italian. After moving back to the United States, I finished high school and then went to Boston University, where I majored in Art History. I received my Masters degree at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. This lead me – finally – back to Italy where I spent two years researching my doctoral dissertation on the sixteenth century Boboli Gardens.

I continue to live in Italy, with my husband and two daughters, dividing my time between a restored farmhouse in Umbria and a rooftop apartment near Rome’s Coliseum. I contribute to a variety of publications on art, architecture, food, culture and travel and have written six books on Italian life and style. I’ve appeared as a travel, food and style expert on This Old House, PBS Gourmet’s Diary of a Foodie, BBC World, Delta In-flight Programs and HGTV.
