Last week, at my friend Jeanette’s photography exhibit, I noticed she was wearing an extraordinary top. Since Jeanette is constantly flitting all over the world, I assumed she had picked it up in Paris, Berlin or New York. But no. She got it from a designer here in Rome. We visited her atelier yesterday.
I’m not sure about where you live, but here in Rome there are lots of very interesting designers – of both clothes and jewelery – that produce full lines, but only sell out of their apartments. Remember that jewelery sale I went to a while back? Very typical.
Sabine Schomber is German, but has been living in Rome since 1988. She creates a pret-a-porter line of clothes out of her bright and airy atelier in an ancient palace near the Ghetto. Sabine’s designs are very minimal, with no extra flounces or pleats, just a strong emphasis on exquisite cut and extraordinary fabrics. Just what I love.
If I didn’t already own way too many coats for my closet, I would have definitely walked out with one. But where I was totally seduced were the tunics. Just like the one Jeanette was wearing last week. Cut in a very clever way that creates a flattering silhouette while at the same time…covering the bits you want covered. (that’s what a tunic is supposed to do, right?) In other words, I did not feel like a potato sack, but like a tall, fashionable person. (I’m barely 5’1”)
Besides clothes, Sabine has a very select but addictive collection of accessories. Along with my tunic, I walked away with a feather light gray pashmina. I am sure I’ll be wearing it every day.
