Since I published my app Eat Italy two months ago there is one question that keeps popping up (besides – strangely – where to get vegetarian food in Rome): when are you going to do one for Florence?
EAT FLORENCE is here! Although most of you associate me with all things Roman, I actually lived in Florence for a few years, and go back often, for work and play. I also report on all things beautiful and delicious in Florence for magazines like Food & Wine, Bon Appetit and Architectural Digest.
Over the years I’ve built up quite a list of places where I love to eat and shop. I’ve been very remiss in writing up my favorites, so developing the app EAT FLORENCE seemed like the perfect opportunity to get my list in order.
You’ll find all my favorites, of course, but also a lot of new places that you might not have heard about. There is a lot happening in Florence these days, with restaurants – big and small – opening all the time. But don’t go expecting exhaustive. If you want ALL the restaurants in Florence there are tons of guide books out there – in English and Italian. EAT FLORENCE is simply what I think is the best. In other words, these are the places that I go to, love and would send friends to.
If you do know Florence already, you may notice that a few of your favorite places are missing. (How many emails will I get asking me why Perche No isn’t there?) FYI, this is version 1.0 of EAT FLORENCE. The beauty of writing apps is that they can be updated constantly and are always a work in progress. I felt it was important enough to get EAT FLORENCE out sooner rather than later, and plan on adding more entries and categories in the very near future. (They updates will load automatically to your device, without having to pay more or do anything).
What can you expect from the next update? Hotels for sure (sorry, just didn’t have enough time) as well as other categories like Butchers and Picnic Spots. And many other great new restaurants I didn’t get a chance to try yet. And yes, I’ll be adding Perche No as well. Why not? (pun intended)
How to buy EAT FLORENCE
EAT FLORENCE is an App, and available through iTunes. Just go to this iTunes link or else type in ‘EAT FLORENCE’ in the search box of the iTunes store.
You can download it directly to your device (if you are connected to wifi) , or else to your computer and then sync it.
If you have an iPhone and iPad, you only have to buy it once, and it will work on both devices.
EAT FLORENCE is published in collaboration with Sutro Media, and for the moment is only available on the iTunes platform. Sutro is working on formatting the app to other platforms (like android) and I’ll let you know as soon as that happens.
Keep in touch with EAT FLORENCE on Facebook and Twitter.

I might be the last person on earth that doesn’t have an iPhone but I would be so interested (and know many other people too) to see what’s on the Eat Italy app! It’s been a long time coming! I’ve just posted my favourite Florentine eats too…

Thank you! Love the Eat Italy app. Can’t wait to give it a whirl in Sept. =) Now, I’ll have to get this app too for our trip.
Can I please make a request for an Italian food glossary of some sort packaged in the app? Thanks!
Elizabeth
A Glossary is a great idea!

Elizabeth–I’ve loved your apps. Always useful when I go to Italy. I’m particularly interested in anything gluten-free. Have you heard of this new gluten-free bistro in Florence called Quinoa:

I hope you get a chance to check it out and add it to your EatFlorence app before I come in Oct. Thanks, Lynn
Elizabeth
Thanks so much! I have heard of Quinoa, but haven’t had a chance to stop by yet. Hope to do so soon!

Hi. I live in the States and my iTunes app says that the EAT FLORENCE app is not available. Am I doing something wrong?
Elizabeth
Sorry to say, but the Eat Italy app is no longer available. I’ll be offering it as a free PDF in the next few weeks. Stay tuned….
