No Florentine ever recommended that I go to Trattoria Due G. Even when I said I was working on a guide to where to eat in Florence, this trattoria was never mentioned. Yet, once I told my Florentine friends I was going to Trattoria G for lunch, every single one of them said “Oh, you’ll love it. It’s one of the best trattorias in Florence and my favorite.”
It’s not like they were trying to hide something from me. I think that Trattoria Due G is so much a part of the Florentine landscape that most locals just take it for granted. And actually, I’m sort of glad it’s not on any hit list. The day I went my friend Nancy and I were the only two tourists in the place. Most of the other men (it was pretty much men) were obviously taking a break from work to dig into huge bistecche fiorentine. Since the place is about a five minute walk from the train station, I have a feeling this is a go to choice to meet a visiting colleague before he heads back to Milan or Rome.
And of course I always end up there during the week too. And Due G was perfect since Nancy had to catch a train back out to the Mugello. Since it was lunch time, our lady like stomachs decided against the slab-o-meat. We started with a shared plate of crispy fried artichokes. Dipped in a light batter, they were piping hot and perfectly tender inside the crunchy batter.
I can never pass up pappa al pomodoro in a place so comfortingly old fashioned as this. Drizzled with a stream of olio nuovo (approved by oil expert Nancy) it was perfect. Nancy decided to be a bit more adventurous and ordered a plate of lemony veal meatballs that I am still dreaming about.
While everyone else in the restaurant lingered over an amaro, we split a slice of home made apple cake, just like nonna used to make. And then Nancy, along with the other businessmen, stomachs full, made her way to the station.

I can’t tell you how many times I have walked past Due G and never entered, and I had heard long ago this was a good place. I always stay at Hotel Mario’s around the corner….I will be sure to have a meal here this year!

I can’t ever pass up pappa al pomodoro when in Florence either. I know that in a week’s stay I’ve eaten is 3 or 4 times. And, yes, I have also made it at home. I am saving this post since I always hope to return to Florence.

Looks and sounds wonderful in its simplicity and appeal. I am not going to bother reproducing this scrumptiousness but will make a mental note to sample all of the above at Trattoria Due G, hopefully, in 2014.

This looks great and the dessert looks right up my husband’s alley! I love pappa al pomodoro as well and I seem to not find it often on the menus, but just added this to my Foursquare to do list! 😉 I’m an organized eating freak.
