I had the great luck to be invited to Iceland last week. It was a last minute thing, but I decided to adjust my schedule, and do everything possible to go.
I mean, how often do you get invited to Iceland?
It was so last minute, that I didn’t have much time to do any research. I had no idea what to expect, beyond geysers and fermented shark meat.
One thing I totally did not expect were the brightly painted buildings that line the streets of downtown Reykjavik. You expect that kind of thing in Burano. But Iceland? And what’s the deal with building out of corrugated iron?
Anyway, as a start to what will be a series of Iceland posts, I’ll share these extremely surprising, colorful and cheerful houses.
Doesn’t it make you start humming “Little Boxes on the Hillside”?
I traveled to Iceland as a guest of the Food & Fun festival, and my airfare was paid for by Iceland Air.

Lucky you! We went to Iceland in 2010 and will go back again. Love, love!

You say those homes and buildings are corrugated iron? Did you get an explanation of why? So interesting, and they all look so inviting, especially with the beautiful bright colors they are painted. How blessed you were to get to travel to Iceland on a whim and free airfare…

I understood that it had to do with a lack of other, native materials to build with. No trees. No clay to build bricks. This was easy to import, and did the job. But I guess since it was so ugly, that lead to the bright colors?

Of course You knew your mother would love all the colors

Outstanding! I’m kind of surprised by the graffiti…guess we can’t get away from it anywhere. It is a beautiful country…it’s amazing how much they charge to go salmon fishing in those streams. 🙂

It as the only graffiti that we saw!

How pretty! I love how even in the grayest of winter months there’s still color from all of the cheery painted buildings. I’d love to visit!

What a great trip! I would imagine the colored houses are good for the psychic on those gloomy days! Did you find some interesting food dishes? I think Iceland Air picked the right person as their guest!
